User interface

The interface of AutoCAD is designed to provide a comfortable interface for the beginning users and also to enable the more experienced users to concentrate on their drawing. The interface is designed to be similar to that of a word processor, providing a visual interface and a keyboard to control the drawing and a mouse to control the cursor and navigate the screen.

AutoCAD’s main window is divided into several zones. The center contains the drawing area, which is bounded by an transparent color border. The other zones are the toolbars, status bar and the properties window. The toolbars are to the left of the drawing window and include the command bar, help bar, preferences bar, and the status bar. The command bar and the help bar provide icons and menu options to the commands and their parameters. The status bar contains different status windows, such as the drawing, the active tools, the current unit system and units, floating coordinate axes and so on.

The properties window includes a properties palette in the bottom area of the window and the options control panel to the right of the properties palette. The properties palette shows the properties and parameters of the selected object or tool and allows to display, hide or change the display of certain properties. The options control panel allows to change or display a number of properties of the selected object or tool.

The drawing area can be divided into eight floating windows. The other windows are the insertion zone, the object and parameter properties, the active layer, the layers panel, and the status bar.

The insertion zone includes the toolbars, command bar, help bar and status bar. It also contains floating windows for drawing, adding entities, insets, text, images and linetypes. The entities include geometries and blocks. The floating windows can be collapsed to make the area smaller.

The object and parameter properties include different panels for the selection of various types of objects and the parameters. The panels include the crosshairs, zooming and panning, orthogonal views, perspectives, and templates.

The layers panel is a floating window which includes the Layers toolbar, layer properties and various floating windows. Layers can be grouped into Layers tab in the Layers panel and these groups can be arranged to any layer manager. These layers can be configured to be either read-only or editable.
