AngularJS: No-Duplication of Data in Two Templates?

I have a page with a number of different UI components which all have the same information, and then a list of all of those components. I’m trying to do the following:

Figure out if the parent of a component has been clicked (for creating a new component)
Check if the specific component’s data is already in my JS array
If not, push it in.

I’ve managed to check if the parent’s id was clicked, and if it was clicked, I’ve also checked if that component’s data was already in my array.
The problem is that if I click on a component’s parent, then click on a component within that parent, the callback function will check if it’s the same element, and it will be. I’m assuming this is because it’s calling the same function twice (the ‚push‘ in the code). Is there any way to stop the same function being called twice? I’ve looked at $rootScope but I’m not sure how to apply it.
