Having a large drive, or multiple at that, means you'll have a lot of information laying around, unchecked. Windows comes with an integrated search function that lets you search for whatever file you may have misplaced on your PC, but it's not the sharpest tool in the shed. Portable Everything takes this search service and packs it into a standalone app that brings up every piece of information that matches your search query.
Straightforward UI
Everything is all about indexing files, so a cluttered interface is not in anybody's interest. The result — a large preview screen topped by the search bar and toolbar. Despite its basic looks, Portable Everything leaves room for tweaking. Use the toolbar to add additional items such as filters, file preview tab, status bar, etc. Furthermore, you can choose to see the results as thumbnails of different sizes or details only.
Everything is not an understatement
Everything might sound like a cocky name, but focusing on the task at hand – indexing drive files – the tool falls no short of perfect. When searching for specific files, a query term is needed. Even if you are looking for a file, each item that has the term in its structure will be displayed.
Moreover, you can execute complete searches. In this case, a search term is not used, causing the tool to index each and every file or folder present on the drive.
Built with speed and low resource consumption in mind
Time is of the essence, and Everything gets that right. Term searches are instant, no waiting times there. Complete searches are also quick, but depending on the state of your OS and the information pool, you might be looking at irregular waiting times. The reference point offered by the developer is around 1 million items per minute.
If you are worried about resource hogging, you shouldn't. If you have more than 75 Mb RAM available for this process and around 50 Mb free disk space, you're good.
All in all, Portable Everything is everything a user interested in a file indexing can wish for. Sporting a clean yet flexible UI and taking it easy on resources combined with the ability to create your local database, this application should be a part of anyone's toolbox when using a computer.

Portable Everything Installer portab.exe

I installed Portable Everything from the portable installer. I used the default settings to index the C:/ drive. Then I ran the indexer, waited for the indexing to finish and I got this:

You get a new index in your search folder, and your previous index is removed.
In C:/Users/myname/AppData/Local/Everything/index/index.json, you got the following:

Comparing the contents of the index to the contents of this page, there is no difference.

The tools I use

Portable Everything

The search app with all the goodness. Featuring TONS of options to make your life easier. I personally chose the default settings, which should be fine for most people, but have a peek at the settings to experiment. Everything integrates well, the „likes“ and „dislikes“ for a file will show up in the results as they are, there is no way of turning that off. The main thing missing here is the ability to customize the results a bit, but this is a relatively advanced topic in and of itself.

Solid Explorer

Solid Explorer is a file manager / explorer replacement for Windows. I prefer the file manager part of it, as it’s much more flexible in nature than typical file explorers are. It supports all kinds of connections, and if you’re into this kind of shit, you might want to have a look at some of the more advanced features. In my humble opinion, the two most important things that Solid Explorer has are the A-Z Index and unified search. The A-Z Index is great, as it gives an excellent overview of the entire directory tree. No matter what directory you’re inside, you can open the A-Z index to get an overview of all the content inside. The integrated search, however, simply sucks. For one, the search field is way too small to allow for a decent search.
