You can easily create a large-scale simulation to display whole groups of creatures for your students, or a small scale simulation to allow students to work through a problem with a single creature at a time.
In the past, I have used the VGL as a way to examine the effects of certain chromosomal abnormalities on animals, and I believe that this simulation would be a good way to explore the effects of recessive and dominant alleles in one’s students. The VGL offers a unique opportunity to explore genetics in a setting that is deeply meaningful and profoundly motivating.

multiple ways to create a new version of VGL3. The version above is
for a standalone version of the game, which means that all of the
animals that are created are stored as separate files that are
uploaded to the VGL server. If you want to create the VGL-with-content
version, you can simply copy the files from the standalone version to
your server and that will be your starting point.

Note that the game you’re currently playing will save automatically
whenever you close the game window.

To create a new standalone version of VGL, create a folder on your computer called „Virtual Genetics Lab 3“ (by default the folder is named „VGL3“). This folder will act as the root folder for VGL3. This will allow you to create a new folder for your animals, and keep track of them all.

To create a new „with content“ version of VGL, copy the folder „VGL3“ from the „standalone“ version to your server. This will create a new folder on your server, „VGL3_with_Content“. This is where the animals for the game will be stored.

In the Virtual Genetics Lab, students use genetic information to determine the inheritance of traits. Each pair of parents determines whether or not they produce progeny with the requested trait. Their choices determine which chromosomes can be inherited in the next generation, and thereby which traits are expressed. The Virtual Genetics Lab III uses a more detailed genetic model than Lab II and allows for consideration of more than one trait in a generation. In this lab, you will learn how to make your data more useful by thinking about how the data would be useful to an investigator who is designing a research project.

Lab Setup:
